Egyptian Hieroglyph Earrings, Black Gold Cartouche Handmade Jewelry
Item Description
The one of a kind NEKHEN handmade earrings are a perfect gift for an Egyptologist, an archaeologist or a woman who adores unique artisan jewelry. Named after the “City of Hawks” in ancient Egypt, the NEKHEN earrings featured two-sided black and gold glass cartouche hieroglyph dangles, coral red glass discs, faceted aqua glass rondelles, copper and sterling silver. The Czech glass cartouches (oval shaped carved glyph tablets) have hieroglyphs impressed into both sides and are highlighted against the matte black glass with a sparkling gold Picasso finish. The main hieroglyph is a stylized curve-billed falcon that represents Horus, the patron deity of ancient Egyptians. A wavy water or river glyph is also found, as well as spirals, hooks and other symbols. The hieroglyphs on the back side of the dangles are reversed from the front. Since the cartouches are two-sided, the earrings look wonderful from any angle.
Adding unexpected color to the earrings design, two types of mesmerizing Czech glass were used. A shiny coral red disc is separated from each cartouche by a copper daisy spacer. Above each disc, separated by a smaller copper daisy spacer, is a faceted translucent aqua rondelle that glows beautifully when the earrings are worn. To mimic the spiral symbols on the cartouches, hand hammered (by me) copper spiral headpins were used. Sterling silver French hooks with copper bead accents finish the fun earrings. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the NEKHEN earrings are a wonderful gift for the woman who loves unique Egyptian hieroglyph jewelry!
