Your eyes can't help but to be drawn to the stunning cross used as the focal for the LA CREENCIA necklace. My Grandmother had an antique sterling cross very similar in design to this one that came from Taxco, a world famous silversmithing town in Mexico. The pewter beauty was created in the United States from lead free pewter in a traditional Mexican design. The cross is on the larger size, about 2.5" / 6.4 cm by 2" / 5.1 cm. As you can see from the photos above, it has a rustic feel and looks as if it has been passed down through generations.
There is quite a bit of symbolism in the design of this cross. Because the cross has three half disc shapes on end of each arm, the cross has been historically known as a "budded cross". The discs represent the Holy Trinity and also "faith, hope and love". They sometimes are thought of as representing a journey in the growth of faith, like the buds of a flower just waiting to open. For even more symbolism, the pewter cross also had a line of raised dots running along each arm radiating from a large central raised dot. The upper and two side arms have three dots each, again the Holy Trinity. The lower arm has six dots, two sets of three.
The pewter cross had been oxidized and then polished leaving darker oxidation in the recessed areas, a perfect foil for the shiny raised areas to stand out. Because the pewter is high quality, it has a glow of old, fine silver . . . without the fine silver or sterling silver price. The backside of the cross pendant is smooth. The bail that connects the pendant to the necklace is hidden on the back.
Because of the raised dots on the budded cross and the glow of the pewter, amazingly colored baroque peacock pearls and ridged pewter lantern beads were used to make up the main body of the LA CREENCIA necklace. The color (or should I say “colors”) of the peacock pearls are amazing: rainbow hues of blue, green purple and pink play against a rich, radiant gray as the light plays across them. The pearls are termed “baroque” because they aren’t perfectly matched in size or shape, something that adds a great counterpoint of interest to the design. Again, to represent the Holy Trinity, between each set of three pearls at the front of the necklace are ridged pewter beads and floral pewter bead caps. Then, at the back, each set of three pearls is separated by a 2 mm sterling silver bead. A hammered sterling silver hook clasp set perfectly finishes the LA CREENCIA cross necklace.
The Christian cross represents Jesus' victory over sin and death, since it is believed that through his death and resurrection, he conquered death itself. Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality. Pearls are used to spread loving vibrations; they are said to promote sincerity, truth and loyalty. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.
The LA CREENCIA cross pendant necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.
